Five Things to Do When a Loved One is Dying

Posted by Malissa Church | Jun 20, 2018 | 0 Comments

When someone you love is dying, the emotional turmoil can make it tough to think through the practical things you should have in place to prepare for the funeral and more smoothly transition their financial affairs.

Here are five quick things you can do to make it easier to wrap up the financial side of your loved one's death:

      1. Find out if there is a Will, Will and Codicils (amendments), or multiple Wills. Obtain original copies if they are available. If not, find photocopies.
      2. Look for final plan documentation like funeral contracts or insurance. Having these handy will allow you to smoothly handle final arrangements.
      3. Find financial records related to the monthly bills, payments, insurance coverage, and vehicle titles.
      4. Talk to family members and friends who are present around the time of death and ask each person to contact other people or groups to let them know of the death.
      5. Look through photographs to find a good one for an obituary and memory board for the memorial service.

With a little organization and foresight, you can ensure the dying process is peaceful and focus on mourning your loved one.
